Tao is not Tao, unusual Tao.

TAO (THE WAY OF THE HEART) can be talked about,
but not the Eternal Tao (Way).

Name not name, unusual name.

Names can be named,
but not the Eternal Name.

(You cannot contain the infinite.)

As the origin of heaven-and-earth,

it is invisible:

As “the Mother” of all things,

it is observable.

We desire to understand the mystery, especially the infinite invisible.

We desire to understand the things we observe, especially what is repeatable.

These both exist, from the same source the Tao.

This is mysterious for the same reason.

Furthermore the source is spiritual and mysterious.

This is the gate to great numbers of mysteries

(The source of the beginning of the Universe created the laws of the Universe.)
